The Community Services Department Responsibilities

Parks, Trails and Open Space - The City of Redding boasts 83 park and recreation facilities ranging in size from small 1-acre neighborhood parks to large regional parks; a 58-mile trail system that includes several bridges; open space totaling roughly 1,150 acres; and several special-use facilities including the Benton Dog Park, Library Park (designed for special events), and three boat launches. Recent projects include the state-of-the-art Redding Aquatic Center, the multipurpose Redding Sports Complex, the Redding Soccer Park, the Vista Ridge Neighborhood Park and The Sculpture Park at City Hall.

Redding Recreation - The Recreation Division serves the needs of thousands of Redding residents each year by providing scores of fitness, educational and special interest programs for all ages ranging from infants to seniors. The Redding Aquatic Center provides water-based recreation, fitness and instruction to almost 100,000 visitors each season. The popular summer camp programs service a total of 170-plus kids per day from June through August. Other programs offerings run the gamut from traditional sports to self-improvement and skills-development classes.

Art in Public Places - The Community Services Department and the Art In Public Places Committee administer the "Art in City Hall" exhibits, The Sculpture Park at City Hall and commission various works for public facilities throughout Redding. Examples of these commissions include the "Balancing Act" sculpture in Caldwell Park (affectionately known as "The Bronze Boys"), the tile mosaic "Donor Wall" at the Redding Aquatic Center and the hammered-copper relief installed at Vista Ridge Neighborhood Park.

Shasta Public Libraries - The Shasta Public Libraries serves Shasta County residents at three locations: the main Redding Library at 1100 Parkview Avenue, and branch libraries in Anderson and Burney. The libraries offer access to a collection of over 191,500 books and media, free computer labs with internet access and a variety of quality programming for the whole family.
